Founded in 1921 in New York, Benrus started making cases for Swiss movements it imported. By 1950, Benrus had overtaken Hamilton’s ranking, becoming the third largest American watch company, after Bulova and Elgin. The name combines the beginning of the first name with the ending of the family name of Benjamin Lazarus, the founder of the company.
The outstanding design quality of this case is a great example of Benrus’ case making ability. The heavy case in 14k rose gold is dominated by the bold hooded lugs in three steps. When viewed from the side, these appear to fan out from the center, hugging the top and bottom edges of the dial and curved crystal. The visual effect is superb, making this one of the most sculptural Benrus models of any era.
The tonneau 17 jewel movement with shock-absorbing device is a Benrus caliber AXII. It is based on the ETA 351 caliber. The case dimensions are 33mm x 23mm.
