The success of IWC’s 37-year-old Portofino collection demonstrates that refinement transcends and endures. The Portofino 34, as it is currently known, was first unveiled in 1988 and is still in production today.

In classic Neo-Vintage fashion, this 1990’s version reinterprets skillfully timeless vintage elements into an utterly modern design packed with great contemporary benefits.

The distinctive rounded bezel is modeled after the domed profile of an antique pocket watch. Its appealing shape provides the perfect frame for the watch’s crisp dial and scratch-resistant mineral glass, softening its tool-watch nature. The water-resistant case back, like its current version, is fastened by four screws. The crown of this earlier design, however, is slightly recessed, unlike the most recent reiteration. The more streamlined case that results creates a stronger and more compact look.

To underline the watch’s emphasis on simplicity, the color of the elongated baton hour indexes and the similarly styled hands matches the stainless steel case.

Yet, behind this aura of serene minimalism is an agile self-winding cal. 37521 movement with a full rotor on ball bearings, shock absorber, 21 jewels, and adjusted to five positions.
