IWC Schaffhausen
Cioccolatone, Cal. 89
circa 1950

$2,995.00

Affectionately nicknamed “Cioccolatone,” due to its resemblance to a square of chocolate, this model is in a class of its own. Very few square dress watches that have appeared over the decades have managed to combine robustness and elegance as successfully as this mid-century example by IWC. In addition, the slightly domed profile gives this watch a surprisingly modern look. IWC may have felt the same way, because this model, also known as the Carré, was reintroduced as a limited edition in 1989.

The watch’s wide bezel, well-proportioned parallel lugs, and slightly thicker profile add substance and visual impact. The inner minute track’s circular shape draws you in by cleverly employing the shape-within-a-shape design concept. The original dial is untouched, with patina adding a vintage quality. The gently angled lugs make this dress watch very comfortable to wear. Measuring 31mm by 31mm without the lugs, the watch also looks great on just about any wrist.

Yet, this IWC wristwatch is not just about a great visual appeal. The cal. 89 movement that powers this watch is recognized as one of the most reliable movements ever created. It combines the robustness of its military issue predecessor with the superb finishing only found on high grade movements.
