This stainless-steel midsize wristwatch features many elements that are typical of military doctor’s wrist watches from WWII. Its size, style, and main features are reminiscent of Croton’s similar Aquamedico model.
Some of these distinctive features include the red sweep seconds hand, luminous numerals, and separate tracks for the minutes and seconds, as well as the element-resistant watch case. This model’s Antimagnetic property was as useful then as it is now.
The copper dial is especially appealing, adding to the watch’s vintage feel. The contrasting mirrored track, as well as the dial’s field and fine print, are original and all very well preserved. The stainless-steel Dauphine hands complement the case’s metal. However, because this style was more prevalent in the early 1950s, this set is most likely a slightly later replacement.
Throughout the 30’s and 40’s, men’s watches were offered in a greater variety of sizes than they are today, with diameters ranging from 28mm to 35mm. This model with screwed-on case back measures 32mm, without the lugs.
The Swiss manual-winding movement is signed “Liengme Watch Co./Gala.” This ebauche manufacturer has collaborated with a variety of watch retailers, including Tourneau, since its inception in 1912. By the 1940s, Tourneau’s New York store had established itself as a source for the latest watch models of the time. This may help to explain the quality and special purpose of this wristwatch.
