Longines
Jumbo Calatrava
Cal. 12.68Z
early 1950s

$1,075.00

SOLD

The oversized diameter of this watch, at 37mm, is considered a bold departure from the conventions of watch sizes of the early 1950s. Longines was, in fact, one of the first watch manufacturers to experiment with large watch cases, back in the 1940s.

The watch case and dial of this model are classic Calatrava, with its well-proportioned bezel and understated elegance reflecting the earlier Art Deco ideal of form follows function. The only sources of ornamentation are the subtle curving of the tapered lugs and the blend of shaped hour indexes and Arabic numerals, both in contrasting yellow gold. The dial was restored several decades ago, allowing it to gradually regain some of its patina.

The in-house caliber 12.68Z with 17 jewels, manual winding, and subsidiary seconds powers this stainless steel Longines watch. The fact that the production of this movement caliber has lasted for several decades attests to its high quality and reliability.
