This Mid-Century Rolex Oyster ref. 6022 with manual winding delivers on several levels, from the unmistakably Rolex shape, distinctive vintage appeal, and reasonable pricing to various technical attributes.

Unlike its bulkier automatic siblings, reference 6022 adds an unexpected touch of elegance to its famed tool-watch identity. The slim shape and 34mm diameter of this case enhance its versatility and comfort.

Equally noteworthy is the larger and special Super Oyster winding crown. Produced for less than three years as an alternative to the threaded version, the Super Oyster crown is only found on early non-automatic Oyster models. The wider diameter and deeper grooving provide greater traction for winding and time setting.

The soft patina of this original dial, with its delicate minute track well preserved, complements the metallic sheen of the case. The mix of arrow hour markers with vertical Arabic numerals is in classic 50’s style. However, the use of slim gilt frames for the tiny luminous dots is rarely seen on 1950s timepieces. This stylistic detail lends a playful flair to the design.

Another distinguishing feature are the hands, with their shape observed largely on the early models of manually wound Rolex Oysters.  In fact, their organic form is rarely seen on any other timepieces. The gently bowed outline balances out the severity of the geometric hour markers.

The list of strong attributes extends to the mechanism, as well. This 17-jewel movement is shock-resistant and features a winding wheel that is inscribed “Patented Superbalance.” After introducing this type of balance wheel in 1935, Rolex used this notation as a marketing tool. The improved accuracy of this redesigned component was due to its more efficient back-and-forth oscillation. This aspect made the Superbalance a standard feature years later, so Rolex no longer saw the need to emphasize it.
